Business insurance

General liability & business owner's policy

General liability protects you when your business is blamed for an injury or damage to someone else's property. A business owner's policy bundles it with property and business income coverage, usually for less than buying each one separately.

What do general liability and a BOP cover?

General liability insurance covers claims that your business caused bodily injury or property damage to someone else, plus personal and advertising injury such as libel, and the cost of defending those claims. A business owner's policy (BOP) packages general liability with commercial property (your building, equipment and inventory) and business income coverage for when a covered loss shuts you down. BOPs fit many small and mid-sized businesses; larger or higher-risk businesses usually buy the coverages separately.

What it covers

Injuries and property damage

A customer slips in your store, or your work damages a client's property.

Products and completed work

Claims about something you sold or a job you finished, after it's done.

Personal and advertising injury

Libel, slander and copyright claims from your marketing.

Your property

Your building, equipment, furniture and inventory, at replacement cost when possible.

Business income

Lost income and extra expenses while you recover from a covered loss.

Equipment breakdown

Sudden breakdown of machinery, refrigeration, electrical and computer systems.

Frequently asked questions

Is a BOP right for my business?

Often, if you're a small or mid-sized office, shop, restaurant or service business. Contractors with heavy equipment, manufacturers and businesses with higher risks often need coverages written separately.

What is a certificate of insurance?

A one-page summary that proves you carry coverage, usually requested by landlords, clients and general contractors. We turn them around quickly, including additional insured and waiver of subrogation wording when a contract requires it.

What doesn't general liability cover?

Injuries to your own employees (that's workers' comp), your vehicles (commercial auto), mistakes in professional advice (professional liability) and data breaches (cyber). We look at the whole picture so nothing falls between policies.
