Insurance for contractors & trades

General contractors, remodelers, electricians, plumbers, HVAC, landscapers and other trades: we build coverage around the jobs you bid, the contracts you sign and the crews you send out.

What insurance do contractors need?

Contractors usually need general liability (including completed operations), workers' compensation, commercial auto, inland marine for tools and equipment, and a commercial umbrella to meet contract limits, plus builder's risk on some projects. General contractors also expect specific contract wording on your certificates, such as additional insured status and waivers of subrogation, so getting those right quickly keeps you working.

What contractors need

General liability

Including completed operations, so finished jobs stay covered.

Workers' comp

Correct class codes for every kind of work your crew does, which keeps premium accurate.

Tools & equipment

Inland marine for tools, equipment and materials at job sites and in transit.

Commercial auto

Trucks, vans, trailers and employees driving their own vehicles.

Umbrella

Higher limits for the contracts that require them.

Certificates, fast

Additional insured, primary and noncontributory and waiver of subrogation wording when the contract calls for it.

Frequently asked questions

Why do general contractors ask to be additional insureds?

So your policy protects them for claims arising from your work. It's standard in construction contracts, and the endorsement wording has to match what the contract requires.

Do I need my subcontractors' certificates?

Yes. If a subcontractor is uninsured, a claim, and the workers' comp premium for their payroll at your audit, can land on you. Collecting current certificates protects you.

How is contractor workers' comp priced?

By payroll in each class code for the type of work, so a carpentry crew and an office manager are rated very differently. Splitting payroll correctly can save real money.
